Outdoor Kitchens, Fire Pits & Appliance Runs | Rear-Yard Terminus Measured | Google 5.0 Rated
Gas taken out to a built-in barbecue, a fire pit or an outdoor fireplace on the back patio is the call this page is for. In Sonoran Foothills, one of the communities along North Valley Parkway, the association's own written guidelines have already put two limits on that job before a tape measure comes out of the truck.
What the rule leaves to be settled on the ground is the length of the run from the meter to that patio, and whether the meter and the pipe already buried will carry one more appliance alongside the range, the dryer, the furnace and the water heater. That part is arithmetic, and it happens on paper before a trench date is offered.

“The landscaper says the fire pit has to be a gas one. Is that actually the rule here?”
In Sonoran Foothills, the community's written guidelines say exactly that, in as many words.
The document is plain: “No wood burning fireplaces, fire pits or barbecues are allowed.” So whatever ends up on that patio, it cannot be a wood-burning one. Where the choice lands on gas, the questions that follow are where the pipe comes from and what size it needs to be.
“There is already a stub out there for the grill. Can the fire pit run off the same line?”
Only if the pipe already in the ground was sized with room left in it.
A branch carries a Btu load over a length, and adding a second appliance changes both halves of that. What settles it is the input rating of the new appliance, the size and length of the pipe already in the ground, and what the meter feeds indoors. Those get added up on paper before anybody promises a tee.
“The patio is finished, and we would like it left that way.”
Then the route earns more attention than the pipe does.
The rule fixes where the run finishes; it says nothing about how it gets there. So the line is walked from the meter to the terminus, looking for planting beds, gravel, and the soft edges of hardscape, and where a hard surface has to be crossed, that crossing is shown on the quote as its own item, with what it takes to put it back.
From the Phone Call to the Pressure Test
Call (602) 883-2787 and name the appliance
What is going on the patio, and its input rating in Btu per hour if the box or the spec sheet is to hand. Then where the gas meter stands and where the appliance is meant to live.
The written rule for your community read first
Where a recorded design guideline covers the lot, the relevant sentences are read before the route is drawn, because they can decide the fuel and the finishing point. In Sonoran Foothills, they do both.
The rear-yard terminus measured
Pavel (Paul) measures from the meter to the patio or courtyard, the rule names, following the route the ground will actually allow, and notes what the line has to pass through on the way.
The whole-house load counted at the meter
The range, the dryer, the furnace, and the water heater already on the meter are listed with their input ratings, the new appliance is added, and the pipe is sized against the total over the measured length.
Material, size and route on one page
The quote names the pipe, the diameter, the route, the terminus and the stub left standing at the patio, plus any hard surface that has to be opened and reinstated.
Run, proved and connected
In homes built before 1978, we only take on work that leaves painted surfaces undisturbed. The line goes in, it is pressure tested before anything is connected, and the appliance is brought on with its own shutoff. The load worksheet the pipe was sized from is handed over with the invoice.

The Gas Runs Worth Calling About
New runs to outdoor kitchens, built-in barbecues, fire pits and outdoor fireplaces; branches to a range, a dryer, a furnace or a water heater indoors; extensions off an existing branch where the sizing allows it; repairs to a damaged or corroded line; and pressure testing on a line that has to be proved.
Our gas line page covers the work generally; the outdoor gas lines page deals with patio and yard runs; the appliance gas lines page covers the indoor branches; and gas leak repair has a page of its own.

The Written Rule That Decides the Fuel and Fixes the Finish Line
Where the community sits
The City's own study of this part of Phoenix names what is inside the village: “Tramonto, a master-planned community at the northeast corner of I-17 and the Carefree Highway, the Sonoran Foothills and a portion of the Dynamite Mountain Ranch master-planned communities.” Sonoran Foothills publishes design guidelines that address fire specifically.
The sentence itself
“Built-in barbecue units, fire pits and/or fireplaces must be contained within the rear yard patio or courtyard and must be designed to match the color and texture of the exterior finish of the home. No wood-burning fireplaces, fire pits or barbecues are allowed.” Two sentences, and between them they answer questions a plumber would otherwise have to ask.
It rules one fuel out
Wood burning is out. That does not by itself name the appliance, because electric fire features exist. What it does mean is that a household planning to burn anything on that patio is planning a gas appliance, and the gas work then belongs to the project from the first sketch rather than to the week the mason finishes.
It fixes where the run ends
The appliance has to be contained within the rear yard patio or courtyard. That takes the shortest-trench answer off the table, because the finish line is already chosen. The run is measured from the meter to that patio, and the return length is the length the pipe must be sized for.
And it decides how the stub is left
The rule also asks that the feature match the color and texture of the house's exterior finish, which means something is going to be built around the appliance. So the stub is left where an enclosure can accept it, with the shutoff reachable once the masonry is up. That is a five-minute conversation on site and a demolition job once the masonry has set.
Which turns the visit into two measurements
One is the rear yard: meter to terminus, along a route the ground allows. The other is the meter itself: the range, the dryer, the furnace and the water heater already drawing on it, listed with their input ratings, with the new appliance added on top. Length and load together decide the pipe.

Fire Features, Loads and Routes: North Gateway Gas Questions
Still have a question? Call Pavel (Paul) directly and get a straight answer, no phone tree.

The line goes in and is proved first, with the stub left standing where an enclosure can accept it and the shutoff placed so it stays reachable once the masonry is up. The appliance is connected on a second visit, after the enclosure is built and the appliance is on site. Both visits are on the quote from the start, so your mason's dates and ours are set against each other.
They sit with the community association or its management company, and many publish them openly. The recorded declaration and the design guidelines are two different documents, and both are worth having, because the guidelines carry the detail about what may be built and where.
It is printed on the appliance, on its data plate or in its manual, in Btu per hour. Two burners with the same look can be a long way apart, so the figure is taken off the paperwork rather than estimated from the size.
Then the length is what it is, and length is half of what sizes the pipe. The route gets walked the way the ground will actually allow it, the figure that comes back is what the diameter is chosen against, and any hard surface on the way is priced as its own item.
The meter and the service up to it belong to the utility, and capacity at the meter is theirs to set. Where the totaled load looks close to what the existing meter delivers, that is raised at the quote so it can be settled with the utility before pipe is bought.
A trench is a narrow thing, and its width is set by the pipe and the cover the pipe has to carry over it rather than by convenience. What decides the state of the yard afterwards is the surface it crosses: decomposed granite lifts and goes back, planting beds recover, and a poured or paved surface has to be cut and made good. The route is walked with you before a spade goes in, so you know which of those your yard is in for.
