Rubber washer hoses harden and crack with age while staying under constant pressure. Swapping them for braided steel lines every few years is one of the cheapest, highest-value things you can do to protect your home from a flood.

Turn the washer valves off when you travel

If your shutoff valves turn easily, closing them when you leave for a trip means a hose that lets go while you are gone cannot flood the house for days. If your valves are stuck, that is worth fixing so you can.
