Gas Line Services in Peoria, AZ
Six inches of extra trench separate a plastic gas line from a metal one here. Peoria set its own buried depths, 18 inches for plastic gas pipe and 12 for metal, and deleted the allowance that used to let a single grill or fire-pit line sit at eight.
Two answers are worth having ready: how far the appliance will stand from the house, and whether anything is already buried along that line. Both change the trench before either changes the price.

Outdoor gas work is where Peoria's depth rule changes the job the most, so the list below shows what each backyard project looks like in the ground.
Indoors, we run new gas lines for gas ranges, cooktops, dryers, and water heaters, and extend gas lines into additions and remodeled kitchens.
Pipe for each stretch
The materials we work in are black iron, galvanized steel, CSST (corrugated stainless tubing), stainless flexible appliance connectors, and polyethylene for burial. A single backyard job often uses three of them: poly in the ground, a riser where it comes up, and metal pipe and a flexible connector at the appliance.
In homes built before 1978, we only take on work that leaves painted surfaces undisturbed. If a gas route would need a painted wall opened, that part goes to a lead-safe certified contractor you hire directly; we do not perform or arrange it.

Six Steps, With the Trench Inspected Open
Point to the spot
A spade goes in before a price does. The depth of anything already buried along the route is checked on the first visit, because the City's figures apply to what goes back in the ground as much as to what is new. Ring (602) 883-2787 to put that visit in the book. For a backyard project, a sketch or photo of the yard helps.
Mark the trench line
On site, we mark where the trench will run and note the pavers, turf, irrigation, and lighting cable it has to cross, along with what the meter already feeds.

The quote spells out, in writing, the pipe for each stretch and the depth it will be buried at.
City permit
New gas piping in Peoria is permit work, and the job is scheduled around the City's review and inspection.
Run the line
The trench reaches the City's depth, the pipe is laid, and the riser and shutoff go in at the appliance end.
Pressure test, then the City's look
The line is pressure-tested, and because the City inspects permitted work before it is covered, the trench stays open until it passes. Then it is backfilled, and the appliance is connected and lit.

Peoria's Gas Pipe Goes Deeper
The national fuel gas codes set a 12-inch minimum depth for buried gas piping, and they allow an exception: a line serving a single outdoor appliance, such as a grill or an outdoor light, can go as shallow as 8 inches. Peoria rewrote that section in both the residential code and the fuel gas code it adopted.
What the City's code says
Peoria's amendment reads: “Underground piping systems shall be installed a minimum depth of 12 inches (305 mm) below grade for metal piping and 18 inches (457 mm) for plastic piping.” It then deletes the 8-inch exception “in its entirety.” In Peoria, a lone line to a grill gets no shallow allowance, and plastic pipe goes half again as deep as metal.
Why plastic sets the depth on many yard runs
Polyethylene gas pipe is made for burial. It comes in long coils, bends around obstacles and does not rust, which makes it a common choice for a run across a yard. Under the City's rule, that choice requires an 18-inch trench along the entire buried length. Metal pipe can sit at 12 inches.
What an 18-inch trench changes
Where the plastic ends
Plastic gas pipe is not allowed inside or under the house's slab, and it extends from the ground through a factory-made riser designed for the purpose. So the route is planned at both ends: where the poly leaves the metal piping near the house, and where it rises at the grill or fire pit to meet the shutoff.
Gas Requests We Get From Peoria Homes
“Our landscaper left a sleeve for the fire pit gas line, but it's only a few inches down.”
Check the depth before anything goes in it.
A sleeve set for another city's rules, or for the national code's 8-inch allowance, can be too shallow for Peoria. We check what is there and plan the line to the City's depth, reusing the path when it can go to 18 inches.
“The patio builder left a capped gas stub in the dirt for a future grill.”
Find the end, then check what is behind it.
A stub left for later is checked before anything connects to it: the pipe material, whether it was buried to Peoria's depth, whether plastic pipe has its tracer wire, and whether the line holds pressure. Then it is extended to the appliance or rerouted.
“We want the grill line to run straight under the new paver patio.”
Possible, at the City's depth.
Plastic gas pipe can be buried under an outdoor patio to code depth, which in Peoria is 18 inches. Under an existing patio, that means lifting pavers along the path. If the pavers are not down yet, the line can go in first; if they are, a route around the edge may disturb less.
“The grill line went in years ago, and now we want a fire pit on the same run.”
The old run gets measured before anything joins it.
What matters is what is already in the ground and how deep it sits. A line laid under the old allowance can be shallower than the City's current figures, so the existing run is located and its cover checked before a second appliance is counted against it. Where a stretch of it has to come up, that length is on the quote before the digging starts.

The rule governs piping being installed. An existing line comes into the conversation when it is part of the job, for example when a new fire pit tees off it, and then we check what is in the ground.
Keeping the gas pipe separate from other buried lines protects each of them when someone digs later. We plan the route with the other lines in view and keep the gas pipe at its own required depth.
They bar wood-burning fire pits and fireplaces, require built-in grills, fire pits, and fireplaces to be set at least five feet from all property walls and fences in the rear yard or courtyard, and require the design committee's approval before any is built, with no automatic approvals. The gas line is scheduled after that approval, so the stub lands where the approved feature will sit.
Yes. Peoria's code exempts only two kinds of gas work from a permit: a portable heating appliance, and replacing a minor part that does not change the equipment's approval or make it unsafe. New piping, even a few feet of it, is outside both.
Quoting over the phone is free, and a firm price is provided after we measure the run and determine what it will feed. If we visit and you choose not to proceed, the visit is $75; once we do the job, no service fee applies.
Peoria's rule allows metal at 12 inches, but buried metal requires a corrosion-resistant coating, so the shallower trench uses coated pipe.
