Gas Line Services in Glendale, AZ
A generator gets delivered, set on its pad and wired, and then everyone turns round and looks at the gas. Glendale has that part written down: a generator takes its own dedicated line from the meter with two labeled valves on it, a new casita gets a meter and a service of its own, and installing, replacing or extending gas pipe here goes through a permit with a check on the pipe size.
A generator run is the one gas job where the pipe is drawn before the pad is poured, because the line leaves the meter on its own and has to reach the set without borrowing from the house. The casita is the same problem with a meter on the end of it.

“The generator company set the unit. Who runs the gas to it?”
That run is its own job, and the City has written down how it goes in.
The generator's installer sets the machine; the gas piping to it is licensed plumbing work. In Glendale, that piping has a specific layout, covered in the next section.
“We're building a casita out back with a kitchen, and it needs gas.”
Where the meter goes is the first question.
A second living unit on the lot is treated differently from a patio grill. Glendale's current code specifies where its gas must come from, and that answer changes the whole plan.
“We're switching the range from electric to gas. Is the meter big enough?”
In a mostly-electric house, the first question is what the meter already carries.
A range burner is a real load on a line that may have been run for a water heater alone. Before the new line is quoted, the question is whether the meter and pipe have room for it, and the local section explains why that comes up so often here.
“Our gas permit ran out before the inspection.”
The City's clock is measured in inspections.
A Glendale gas permit remains active by passing inspections, and one that lapses must be renewed or extended before work can be completed. If a job has stalled, call us with the permit number and where the work stands.
Glendale's Own Gas Rules: Generators, Casitas and Pipe Size
Three pieces of Glendale paperwork govern how gas work is handled here: the City's permit Q&A, a Building Safety technical guideline on generators, and the local amendments that took effect with the 2024 codes on January 9, 2026.
Installing, replacing, or extending a gas pipe is permit work
The City's permit Q&A asks whether you need a permit to install, replace, or extend a gas pipe, and answers “You bet!” It adds that the size of your gas piping “will be checked when you apply for your permit.” The City builds on the 2024 International Fuel Gas Code, adopted with Appendix A, the code's pipe-sizing tables, and the City checks the pipe size before the work is approved.
A generator gets a line of its own
A Glendale technical guideline says that whenever a gas generator is installed, a separate fuel gas pipe must run to it, used for nothing else. At the meter, that pipe gets a valve locked in the open position and labeled “GENERATOR NATURAL GAS SUPPLY.” A second valve at the meter is labeled “BUILDING NATURAL GAS SUPPLY.” The generator can't be tapped off the nearest house branch; the run starts at the meter, and both valves and both labels are part of the job.
A new casita gets its own meter
Glendale adopted the code's appendix on accessory dwelling units with its own amendments. For a new ADU, a casita set up as a separate place to live, the gas section calls for a separate gas meter and service, with shutoff valves the occupants can reach. The casita's gas starts at that new meter, and the piping we run begins there, with no branch taken from the main house.
Why the existing house line matters
Census figures show about three in four Glendale homes heat with electricity, and only about one in five with utility gas. A house that heats with electricity may have gas at only one or two appliances, or none, so before a generator, a gas range or a tankless unit is added, we find out what the meter and the existing pipe are already carrying.
Gas Line Work We Do in Glendale
Ranges, cooktops and dryers get new lines, including switches from electric to gas. Grills, fire pits and outdoor kitchens get their outdoor runs. Water heaters get their supply lines, including the larger feed a tankless conversion can need. Additions and remodeled kitchens get gas extended into them. And lines that have corroded, been damaged, or started leaking, above ground or buried, get repaired.
In homes built before 1978, we only take on work that leaves painted surfaces undisturbed. If a gas route would need a painted wall opened, that part goes to a lead-safe certified contractor you hire directly; we do not perform or arrange it.
Four Steps on a Glendale Gas Job
Meter survey
Call (602) 883-2787 with the job you have in mind (anyone who smells gas should get out of the house and phone 911 and Southwest Gas from the street first). On site, we look at the meter, the existing pipe, and the route the new line has to take.
A sizing sheet ready for the permit
Every appliance the line will feed is added up against the pipe length, so the numbers are ready for the City of Glendale's size check. Gas piping here needs a City permit before work starts, and the price you approve covers the job as scoped.
Run, valved and marked
The dedicated line leaves the meter and runs to the set in black iron where it is exposed on the outside of the house, or in polyethylene with a steel riser at each end where the route goes underground. The bore is the one the sizing sheet called for. The two valves the City asks for go on that line, one at the meter end and one at the set, and both are marked.
Held, then handed over
The new pipe is brought up to pressure and held there before any appliance joins it. On a generator run, the two valves the City asks for are set on that dedicated line and marked, so the machine can be shut at the meter end and at the set itself without touching the rest of the house.

Glendale Gas Permits, Meters and More: Your Questions
Still have a question? Call Pavel (Paul) directly and get a straight answer, no phone tree.

The City says a permit expires if the work it covers is not begun within 180 days of issue, and that you must pass at least one inspection in each 180-day period to keep it active. There is also a two-year limit to finish the project.
The rule applies to accessory dwelling units, meaning a separate place to live. A room without its own living facilities is a different case, and the City's plans reviewer makes that call for your project.
Under the same appendix, yes: the City's amendment calls for a separate city water meter and water service line for an ADU. That part is arranged with the City; we plan the gas side around the new gas meter.
CSST has to be tied into the house's electrical grounding, following the maker's instructions and the code, and that bonding is what lowers the risk from a lightning strike near the home. The bonding connection itself is electrical work, and the quote says who makes it. If you are unsure whether the CSST already in the house is bonded, ask us to check it during a visit.
For work on the house side of an existing meter, usually not at all. If your job calls for a new meter, the utility's meter date sets when gas can flow, so it is worth asking for that date early.
The City's guideline applies when a generator is installed. If we are changing the gas line to an existing generator, we lay it out to the guideline; for one we are not touching, we can tell you how it compares.
No. The City's guideline reserves the generator's pipe for the generator alone, so the fire pit gets its own branch from the house side.
