Gas Line Services in Cave Creek & Carefree, AZ
Fireplace, Range & Fire Pit Lines | Gas Specialists | Google 5.0 Rated
If you are adding a fireplace to a Cave Creek or Carefree home, converting an old wood-burning fireplace to gas logs, or bringing gas out to a new fire pit, you're on the right page. Both towns write the same rule into their codes: a new indoor fireplace needs a permanently installed gas or electric log insert unless it is a certified wood-burning unit, so in these towns a new fireplace usually means a new gas line.
What this page is about is the gas side of that: the branch, its bore, and the shutoff that has to end up inside the firebox opening. The masonry, the surround, and the insert itself belong to other trades, and Pavel Farcas (Paul) runs the pipe that meets them.

A gas fireplace is fed by a branch off the house system that finishes inside the firebox opening, at a shutoff the log set connects to. Above ground, that branch is black iron, with stainless flex only at the set itself where the manufacturer's instructions call for it, and CSST where a route through framing suits it better. Where a run has to go underground, such as the line out to a patio fire pit, it goes in as poly with a steel riser bringing it back up at each end.
The bore comes off the rating stamped on the log set, added to everything else already drawing on the leg the branch tees from. A set rated well under the kitchen range still has to be counted alongside it, because the two can be alight at once. That sum, against the distance from the tee to the firebox, is the whole of the sizing question on a hearth job.
In Cave Creek and Carefree, fireplace lines lead the list, followed by ranges, dryers, water heaters, grills, fire pits and whole-house generators. New lines and repairs to old ones are both part of the work.

In These Two Towns, a New Fireplace Is a Gas Job
Cave Creek and Carefree run separate building departments, and their codes for fireplaces read almost line for line alike. The effect on the trade is direct: a hearth here arrives with a gas branch attached to it, and the branch has to be planned while the firebox is still open.
What a new fireplace can be
Cave Creek's code says the Building Official “shall not approve or issue a permit to construct or install a fireplace or a wood stove” unless it is one of a short list. First on that list: “A fireplace which has a permanently installed gas or electric log insert.” The others are solid-fuel units certified by the EPA to its wood-heater standard, or “tested and listed by a nationally recognized testing agency to meet performance standards equivalent” to it. Carefree's Clean-Burning Fireplace Standards set out the same list.
No going back to wood
Both codes also close the door behind a conversion. Cave Creek's version reads: no one shall “alter or remove a gas or electric log insert or a wood stove insert from a fireplace for purposes of converting the fireplace to directly burn wood or other solid-fuel.” Carefree's article uses nearly identical words. A fireplace switched to gas logs is meant to remain a gas or electric fireplace, which is why the set you pick is a long-term decision.
Fire pits sit outside this rule
The same sections list what they leave alone: “Fire pits, barbecue grills, and other outdoor fireplaces.” An outdoor fire feature carries no log-insert requirement, and its gas line is ordinary gas piping under the town's fuel gas code: a buried poly run, a riser at the feature, and a shutoff above grade where it can be reached.
Where the rule leaves the pipe
Because the insert is settled before the permit, the log set's rating exists before the branch is cut, which is unusual and useful. The bore can be fixed from a real number instead of an allowance, the tee can be picked on the leg that carries the total, and the shutoff can be set inside the firebox opening where the set's own connection will reach it. Each town adds that fireplaces and “other gas, electric, or solid-fuel burning appliances” are subject to the permits and inspections required by the town.
Hearth Plan to First Flame
The set, the firebox and the house
In these two towns, the insert comes before the pipe: a new fireplace must have a permanently installed gas or electric log insert, so the set is chosen while the branch is still just a line on paper. That is where the first call starts, on (602) 883-2787.
Tee, route and bore
The leg that can carry the extra load is picked; the distance from that tee to the firebox is measured through the framing it has to cross; and the bore is set by adding the set's rating to what the leg already feeds.
Priced with the firebox still open
The quote names the tee point, the material for each stretch, the route through the structure and where the shutoff will sit inside the opening, and the town's permit step comes next.
Proved before the set goes in
Pressure is applied to the finished branch while the joints are still in view, and the shutoff is left inside the firebox opening for the set to connect to. The town inspects the piping; the set's own instructions govern the insert.

Three Hearths, Three Starting Points
“We bought a Carefree house with a wood fireplace and would like gas logs.”
A conversion the town's own rule points toward.
The firebox gets a gas line, and a shutoff for the log set you choose. Once the gas logs are in, the town code requires the fireplace to be gas or electric, so choose a set you will be happy with for years.
“The previous owner pulled the gas logs out of our fireplace.”
The pipe may still be there; the town rule still covers the firebox.
A capped line behind the firebox is checked from the meter end before any new set is connected. If the plan was to burn wood again, both towns' codes bar removing a log insert for that purpose.
“We'd like to burn wood in the fireplace on cold nights.”
Check the county's burn calendar first.
Maricopa County's air quality rules state that “Burning anything other than gaseous fuels (including gas logs) in a fireplace, woodstove, or chimenea is prohibited on a No Burn Day.” A gas-log fireplace stays usable on those days; a wood fire does not.
“The hearth is going in this spring, and we haven't chosen the log set yet.”
The set's rating determines the line size, so the model comes first.
The branch to the firebox is sized based on the rating stamped on the log set, so the model is what determines the pipe size. A hearth can be built and the route drawn before the set arrives, and the line is cut to size once that rating is known. Choosing the set late is what turns one visit into two.
Before You Order the Log Set

Cave Creek's section took effect on December 31, 1998, and it governs fireplaces built or installed on or after that date, as well as any later conversion of a gas insert back to wood. For a specific older fireplace, the town's building office can say how it applies.
Yes. Both codes accept a permanently installed electric log insert. That work belongs to an electrician; if you later want gas instead, we run the line.
The route and the tee can. The bore waits for a number, because the whole point of sizing is the rating on the set plus whatever else draws on that leg. Where a decision has to be made early, the branch is run for the largest set under consideration, and the choice stays open.
So the fireplace can be isolated on its own without reaching behind a finished wall, and so the set's flexible connection has something to land on within its own length. Setting it there takes minutes while the opening is unfinished and is awkward work afterwards.
Where the routes suit it, yes, and then both ratings are counted into the bore from the start. The fire pit end is a buried poly run with a riser and a shutoff above grade; the fireplace end is hard pipe finishing inside the opening. One branch, two different assemblies at its ends.
Cave Creek's code treats a violation of its fireplace section as “a Class 1 misdemeanor,” among other penalties that may apply.
Both codes exempt “outdoor fireplaces” without defining the term. Where a patio is roofed or partly enclosed, the town's building office decides which side of the line it falls on, so ask before the firebox is built.
With Southwest Gas, which sets the meter and brings service to it. Once the meter location is known, the house piping from the meter to each appliance is our responsibility to plan and install.
