Balcony & Patio Grill Lines | Kitchen, Laundry & Generator Gas | Google 5.0 Rated
Not every balcony is allowed to have a grill on it, and that gets settled before a single length of pipe is priced. Ten feet of clearance from combustible construction is the measurement the City's fire code turns on, and a sprinklered building and a one- or two-family dwelling are the two exceptions written into it.
Two things are worth having in hand before you call: whether the building is sprinklered, and the input rating printed on the grill you have chosen. The first decides where the stub may land on the balcony; the second decides the pipe that reaches it. Pavel Farcas (Paul) is the plumber on the Camelback East gas jobs he takes.

One Christian family has owned the business since 2000.A Balcony Line Is an Outdoor Run on Somebody Else's Wall
Two constraints meet on a balcony, and neither of them is about the grill. The fire code fixes the only place the line is allowed to end. The building fixes everything about how the pipe gets there.
The clearance that fixes the end point
Phoenix enforces the 2024 International Fire Code with the City's own amendments. Its section 4104.2 reads: “Charcoal burners and other open-flame cooking devices shall not be operated on combustible balconies or within 10 feet (3048 mm) of combustible construction.” The exceptions that matter here are “One- and two-family dwellings” and “Where buildings, balconies and decks are protected by an automatic sprinkler system.” On a balcony that is neither, ten feet of separation from combustible construction is the whole of the available space, and on most balconies that is one corner.
Which is why the pipe travels
The stub goes where the clearance is, and the clearance is rarely beside the riser. So the run has length in it: from the tie-in inside the unit, through the exterior wall, and along the outside face to the corner the measurement allows. That length is the first number on the quote, because it is the number the building gives you and the one nobody can negotiate.
How the pipe is carried on the wall
An exposed exterior run is black iron or CSST above ground, and neither is meant to hang off its own joints. The run is strapped at intervals along its length so the fittings carry no weight, and it stands off the wall face instead of lying against stucco or block, so the back of the pipe stays dry and can be seen. Where it is within reach at floor level, it is protected. Where it changes direction, it turns on fittings.
The hole through the wall
Every exterior run has at least one penetration, and on a multifamily building that hole is the association's wall as much as it is your pipe's route. The pipe passes through in a sleeve, the annular space is sealed, and the opening is made good on the outside face. Where the wall is a fire-rated assembly, the sleeve and the seal are what keep it one.
What is on the end of it
A balcony that gets a grill this year and a patio heater the next is one line carrying two appliances. The input rating on each appliance's plate is read, the two are added, and that total is used to size the run for the distance it covers. Saying at the quote that a second appliance is coming is what stops the line being right once and wrong later.
Gas Line Work Around Camelback East
Outdoor lines are the reason this page exists, and plenty of gas work in Camelback East happens indoors too: a gas range replacing an electric one, a dryer line, a water heater connection, or a line moved during a kitchen remodel. At the village's single-family houses, we also run lines to built-in grills, fire features, and outdoor kitchens, and to whole-home standby generators.
Repairs cover leaking sections inside the house and lines out to backyard appliances. On a mid-rise, a balcony line runs on the building's exterior, and its route along the wall is part of what the association approves.
In homes built before 1978, we only take on work that leaves painted surfaces undisturbed. If a gas route would need a painted wall opened, that part goes to a lead-safe certified contractor you hire directly; we do not perform or arrange it.

Building Check Before Pipe
House, townhome or condo
Before you ring (602) 883-2787, two things are worth asking management about: whether the building is sprinklered and how it handles requests for exterior work. Smell gas? Get out first; 911 and the utility can be called from outside.
The fire-code answer
For a balcony or patio in a multifamily building, you confirm the building's sprinkler status and construction with management; anything unclear is a question for the fire code official.
The association's written OK
A line on the outside of a condo building needs the association's written permission. The route, the pipe, and where the shutoff sits can be described for that request.
Length, load and material
The tie-in is picked, the run to the allowed corner is measured, the appliances the line will feed are added up off their plates, and the pipe and its bore are set against that total and that distance.
Through the wall and along it
With the Phoenix permit issued, the penetration is cut and sleeved, the run is strapped along the outside face on standoffs, and it ends at a shutoff within reach of where the appliance will stand.
Pressure on, then the grill
Pressure is applied to the finished run and remains on while the joints are checked, with the pipe still uncovered. The grill is fitted afterwards, and the spot it stands in is marked on the deck, because a grill slid two feet along the rail on a warm evening is no longer standing where the measurement was taken.

How a Camelback East Grill Line Gets Planned
The Parts of a Balcony Run, and What Decides Each One
This page carries a table where the other city pages carry customer quotes, because on a balcony the questions are all about one object and it is easier to show it in pieces.
One question does come up often enough to answer here: the neighbor on the floor below has a grill, so why is this a conversation at all? The fire code sets the floor, and the association can be stricter, and a grill someone else uses is evidence of nothing. Management and the fire code official are the two answers that count, and a line on the building's exterior needs the association's written permission besides, which has to come from the owner, whoever is living there.

Arizona's Condominium Act treats balconies and patios designed to serve a single unit, but outside its boundaries, as limited common elements allocated to that unit, unless your declaration says otherwise. That is one reason the association has a say in what gets built there.
No. The rule in section 4104.2 addresses open-flame cooking devices, and an electric grill does not use a flame. Your association's rules can still limit it.
The exception names buildings, balconies, and decks protected by an automatic sprinkler system. Sprinkler heads inside the units may not reach the balconies, so the question to ask management is about the balconies specifically.
The City's adopted 2024 fire code, with its amendments, took effect on February 17, 2026.
A heater is a separate appliance with its own manufacturer's clearances, and it would get its own shutoff. Whether it can share the line depends on the combined load, which is calculated in the quote.
