If SRP sends your electric bill, as it does for many Ahwatukee homes, its heat pump water heater rebate comes with rules set out on SRP's rebate page, its application checklist, and its contractor terms. The claim is yours to file. The rules land on different parts of a replacement job.
The heater itself
SRP's terms call for replacing the existing water heater with a new ENERGY STAR certified heat pump model “that meets minimum efficiency ratings with a Uniform Energy Factor (UEF) of 2.8 or better.”
The home
The heater has to go into “a home that has had permanent electric service from SRP for more than one year.” SRP lists the kinds of homes that count, and the ones we work in are on that list: a single-family detached home, a single-family attached home, or an apartment or condo.
The invoice
SRP's checklist asks for a paid-in-full itemized invoice or receipt that shows:
The calendar
SRP's page sets two dates. The heater has to be installed by an Arizona-licensed residential plumbing contractor “before April 30, 2027,” and the application “must be submitted within six months of the installation date.” Heat pump installs made before July 1, 2023 do not qualify at all, and SRP accepts applications either through its online rebate account or by email with the signed contractor agreement, a dated copy of the paid invoice, and a completed paper application.
Alongside the invoice goes SRP's Contractor Terms and Conditions form, signed by the installer, who also completes the contractor and heater sections of the application. SRP's terms warn that missing information, “including signatures, will result in the return of the rebate application.” Whether we can complete the contractor section for your job is something to ask when you call. SRP also says it vouches for neither the heater nor the installer: under its terms, the customer chooses and supervises the contractor, and each heater gets its own application if more than one is installed.
Everyday Tank Repairs, and When a Tank Is Done
An electric tank that stops heating usually needs an element or a thermostat, and a repaired heater stays in place with no rebate question at all. Gas tanks get thermocouples, gas controls and burner work, and a repaired part is warranted for a year.
A heater whose shell has failed gets replaced, and that is where the choice opens up: a standard tank, gas or electric, carrying its maker's six-year warranty, or a heat pump model. We haul the old heater away.

The one-year rule applies to the home.
SRP's wording is about the home's service history, not how long you have held the account: the heater goes into a home that has had permanent SRP electric service for more than one year. SRP's Rebate Program at (602) 264-3108 can confirm whether it applies after a sale.
“Last time we replaced a heater, the rebate form came back to us.”
SRP sends an application back for a missing line, and the line is usually on the invoice.
SRP returns applications that lack required information or signatures. The checklist guards against gaps such as a missing license number, a model number that does not match the certified list, or an invoice that still shows a balance. SRP's checklist tells applicants to get a revised invoice from the contractor before submitting if anything required is missing.

SRP's terms say one check is issued per approved application, to the person listed as the customer of record on the SRP account, unless that customer agrees to release it to the contractor.
SRP withholds the rebate pending the outcome of the inspection. If the installation complies, the rebate is paid. If it does not, SRP notifies the customer and contractor, the installation is brought into compliance and re-inspected by SRP's authorized inspectors, and the contractor pays for the re-inspection.
SRP's requirement is to replace your current water heater with a certified heat pump model, and it does not name the old heater's fuel. A heat pump unit runs on electricity, so switching from gas also means rerouting the circuit where the gas tank stood, which is an electrician's work. SRP can confirm the details for your home.
SRP says rebates are not available for new construction, so ask SRP before counting on one for a new casita.
