What Ignoring a Slow Water Leak Changes in Six Months

Two houses on the same street, built from the same plan, develop the identical failure: a slow, steady weep at a supply fitting under a bathroom vanity, too small to spray and too quiet to hear over a running fan. In one house, someone notices the cabinet floor has gone soft underfoot within a couple of weeks and calls a plumber. In the other, nobody opens that cabinet for six months. Same fitting, same leak rate, same house plan. By the time a plumber reaches either one, what separates the two jobs has almost nothing to do with the pipe and almost everything to do with what the water reached while it waited.

The Same Leak at Three Points in Time

A slow leak does not announce itself the way a burst does. It wicks into whatever porous material sits closest to the fitting and stays there, re-wetting the same few inches every time the fixture runs, never quite drying between events. What changes between an early catch and a late one is how far that wicking has traveled and how much of it has become permanent.

While the water is still confined to the fitting: The wetness stops at the connection and the few inches of cabinet base directly beneath it, and everything past that, including the back of the cabinet and the wall behind it, is dry to the hand. The repair is the fitting itself, plus drying out the small section of base that took water.

Once it has reached the cabinet deck: The particleboard has drawn water in at its cut edges and started to swell, and the deck gives underfoot rather than simply feeling damp. Reaching the fitting now means pulling the cabinet away from the wall rather than opening a door, and the swollen section of deck is not going back.

Once it has moved past the cabinet into the wall: The bottom of the drywall on the far side of that wall has taken water, and the cavity behind it is holding moisture where no air reaches. The repair now has to account for everything the water found on the way, not just the fitting that released it.

How Drywall and Cabinetry Actually Fail

The mechanism is the same in both materials: the surface that looks intact is not what is holding the moisture. Drywall's paper facing wicks water sideways through capillary action, well beyond the wet spot a person can see, and the gypsum core underneath loses its structural strength as it stays saturated. A screw that held firm in dry drywall pulls loose in gypsum that has been wet for weeks, which is one reason a cabinet or towel bar mounted near a slow leak can start to feel loose before any stain ever shows.

A slow supply-line leak usually reaches particleboard cabinet flooring before it reaches drywall, since the cabinet floor sits closest to the fitting and its cut edges have no factory seal against standing moisture.

Cabinetry fails at its edges first. Most cabinet boxes are particleboard or MDF under a laminate or wood-veneer skin, and that skin is sealed only on the visible faces. A cut edge, a screw hole, or a factory seam exposes raw substrate, and raw particleboard swells quickly when water sits against it. That is why a cabinet floor or toe-kick, sitting directly under a slow supply leak, is often the first thing to visibly change shape, while a solid-wood face frame on the same cabinet can go untouched for far longer.

Why the Opening Gets Bigger, Not Just the Repair

Reaching the same fitting takes progressively more material removed the longer the leak has been running, because the water has had more time to spread out from that one point and the repair needs sound, dry material to work from. Caught early, that usually means pulling one cabinet away from the wall, exposing a few inches of pipe, and repairing the fitting in a single visit. Caught later, it can mean removing the whole cabinet box, cutting back drywall well past whatever staining shows on the surface, since the saturated core extends beyond the visible mark, and sometimes lifting the flooring at a seam if water tracked underneath it before anyone knew to look.

A leak caught while it is still a single failed connection is usually a single fitting, repaired in place. The same leak found later, after water has migrated along the pipe run inside the wall, more often means a section of pipe needs to be replaced rather than one joint, because there has to be enough sound material exposed on both sides of the failure to make a repair that holds. What started as one trade's job, the plumbing repair itself, picks up carpentry to reset the cabinet and finish work to close the wall the longer it waits, and if the wall cavity stayed wet long enough to need structural drying rather than simple air-drying, that piece hands off to a separate restoration trade once the leak itself is stopped.

The Repair Grows While the Fitting Stays the Same

The fitting that failed in either house was never the hard part. A slow leak at a supply connection is a small, ordinary repair on the day it is found, whether that day is week two or month six. What actually changes over time is everything around that fitting: how much material has to be removed to reach it, how many trades end up involved in putting the room back together, and how long the room stays unusable while that happens. Could a musty smell mean the leak has been running a long time?

Does painting over a water stain get rid of the problem?

Is a swollen cabinet floor something that gets dried out and reused?

Usually not, if the substrate is particleboard or MDF. Once that material swells, the fibers do not press back together as they were at the factory, so the panel retains a different shape even after it is fully dry. The shutoff under the sink has been damp for months. Does that change the repair?

Often, and not in the direction people expect. A compression angle stop that has been weeping at its ferrule for months sits in its own mineral deposit, and a stop in that condition frequently will not seat when it is finally closed. What should have been one fitting becomes the fitting plus the stop, plus isolating the house at a larger valve to change the very part that exists, so the house never has to be isolated.
