New Gas Runs & Extensions | Tested to the City's Own Figures | Google Reviewed

Buckeye would not take the model code's gas pressure test as it was written. It struck the section out, put its own figures in place of it, and named the instrument as well as the numbers, so the pressure your finished run has to hold is a local decision.

Pavel (Paul) Farcas owns American Discount Plumbing and lays the pipe he quotes, so the run and the price come from the same person. The license is AZ ROC #150707.

Buckeye Threw Out the Model Gas Test and Wrote Its Own

The section the city struck out

Buckeye's 2024 construction codes, effective January 1, 2025, carry an amendment headed “Section 406.4.1 Test pressure. Delete in its entirety and replace with the following,” and the city wrote the replacement itself. The same amendment appears in the residential code at G2417.4.1, so it applies to houses as well.

Three figures in a single sentence

The replacement reads: “The test pressure to be used shall be no less than 1½ times the proposed maximum working pressure, but no less than 3 psig (20 kPa gauge) for 10 minutes; the acceptable air gauge shall be calibrated in 1/10 lb. increments.” Three of those figures are the test itself. One and a half times the proposed maximum working pressure sets the target; three pounds a square inch is the lowest that target may be, and ten minutes is how long the reading has to hold.

And a fourth requirement, about the instrument

The fourth figure is the unusual one: the ordinance specifies a gauge graduated in tenths of a pound, so the city has written the instrument into the rule alongside the numbers. The practical effect is resolution. On a coarse gauge, a slow loss over ten minutes can hide inside the width of the needle, and on a gauge marked in tenths it has somewhere to show.

Where the gauge is connected

Buckeye's residential gas line checklist adds the practical half: “All tests must be made through the open valve and flex line.” So the valve and the flexible connector at the appliance end sit inside the assembly under test, and the reading covers pieces a customer would otherwise take on faith.

What this applies to

This is the specification for gas piping that has just been installed. A run we have laid is brought up to those figures and held there for the ten minutes, and only then does an appliance go on it. The figures are public; they hold for a short branch and for a long run alike, and they put numbers behind the words “it held fine.”

WHY PAVEL / ADP

Five Things Written Into a Buckeye Gas Quote

The pressure the new run will be held to, and how long it has to hold it, are on the quote before a shovel moves.
The valve and the flexible connector at the appliance end sit inside the tested assembly, the way the city's residential checklist sets it out.
The pipe, the route and the test all appear in writing, so none of the specification is settled by conversation.
A repair replaces the damaged length with new pipe, and parts fitted on a repair carry a one-year warranty.
What the city requires of a job like yours is named on the quote, with the Buckeye Permit Center given as the place to confirm it for your address.
When you call

Ten Minutes on a New Gas Line, Start to Finish

1

What gets shut out of the test

Before any pressure goes on, the new run is separated from the gas that feeds the house, and nothing is burning at the far end of it. What is under test is the new pipework and the fittings at the appliance point, and nothing beyond them.

2

The target figure, settled before the day

The figure the run has to reach is one and a half times its proposed maximum working pressure, or three pounds a square inch, whichever of those is higher. It is worked out and written on the quote, so it is a number you already have when the day comes.

3

The first reading

Air goes in until the needle sits at that figure, and where it sits is noted. The whole result is a comparison of two readings, so the one taken at the start is half the answer.

4

Ten minutes, timed and left alone

The clock runs for the full ten minutes Buckeye's wording names. Nothing is connected, covered or backfilled while it does, because a run that is interfered with mid-test has to start over anyway.

5

What a fall in the needle means

A reading that slides means a joint is passing air. The joint is found and remade, the run is brought back up to the same figure, and the ten minutes begin again at zero. Half a hold counts for nothing.

6

What follows a hold

Once the needle has stayed put for the full period, the pressure comes off, the appliance is connected, and its burner is started, and we stay to watch it run. You are shown the shutoff serving it and where that valve is located relative to everything else on the system.

What Falls Under Gas Work Here

New piping is the bulk of it. Indoors, that means branches for cooking appliances, laundry appliances, water heating, and furnaces. Outdoors it means grills, fire features, patio kitchens, gaslights, and runs out to a casita or a detached workshop. A whole-home generator hookup belongs on the same list, and so do extensions to a system already in the house and capping off a line whose appliance has failed.

Repairs come in as well, where a run has been struck by a spade or a post. Utility locates are requested before the ground is opened, and in a home built before 1978 any opening of painted surfaces is left to a lead-safe certified contractor you hire directly. Three further pages go deeper into materials, yard work, and appliance connections.

SIGNS / WHAT WE HANDLE

What the Test Means, Job by Job

“The built-in grill is destined for the far corner of the patio.”

Distance changes the pipe and the trench, and leaves the test where it is.

The completed run is brought up to the figure on your quote and held there, with the valve and the connector at the grill inside what is tested.

“We're swapping the electric range for gas, and there is no line to the kitchen.”

A branch off the house system, counted against what else draws on it.

This is a branch taken off the house piping and brought to the wall behind the cooker, sized for the appliance's draw and for whatever else is fed from the same supply. The branch is tested before the range goes onto it.

“The laundry has power and no gas. What has to be run to it for a gas dryer?”

Length does not decide the specification.

A run of a few feet inside a laundry goes up to the same pressure for the same ten minutes, because Buckeye's wording sets no lower bar for short work. A short job is a shorter day, not a lighter standard.

“A landscaper put a spade through the line out to the fire pit.”

Damaged pipe comes out, and new pipe goes in.

A struck line is repaired by replacing the damaged length, so the section going back in is new piping and is tested as such.

Whether newly installed piping holds a set pressure for a set time. The run is isolated, brought up to the figure the code names, and watched. A reading that sits still for the full ten minutes is the result the specification is written to produce.

It can be. The wording sets the test at no less than 1.5 times the proposed maximum working pressure, with 3 psig as the floor. Where the working pressure is high enough that one and a half times it comes out above three pounds, the higher figure is the one used.

The city's own wording names an air gauge. The point of the exercise is to hold the new pipework at a pressure above the one it will work at, and that is done before any fuel reaches it.

Where the site allows it, yes. The gauge stays on the line for the entire test, and the figure it should be at is the one written on your quote.

Buckeye treats residential gas line work as permit work. What your particular job needs, and what has to go with the application, is confirmed by the city's Permit Center, and the quote names what we understand a job of your kind to involve.

It turns on how far the pipe has to travel, the ground it crosses, and what the city requires of work of that kind. The walk-through gives you a day count.
