Main Water Line Repair and Replacement in Phoenix
The decision on a wet patch of yard is whose pipe it is, because the answer settles who digs and who pays. Phoenix Water Services repairs the line from the street to the meter, and everything from the meter to your house is yours. The meter itself is what settles it, and reading it takes two hours with no water use.
That buried run from the meter to the house is the main water line, and it is the part American Discount Plumbing repairs, replaces, and reroutes. Pavel Farcas (Paul) founded the company in 2000, still runs the jobs, and walks the route across your yard with you before a shovel goes in.

“There's a soggy patch between the street and my house.”
Ground that stays wet in July: a buried line giving itself away.
Phoenix soil dries fast, so a patch that stays damp, sinks, or grows greener than the rest of the yard deserves a look. It can also be irrigation, so the first step is ruling the drip system in or out before the water line comes up. Look along the stretch of line between the meter box and the house valve.
“My bill jumped, and nothing inside is leaking. How do I prove where it is going?”
The meter answers that question by itself, and the test costs you nothing but two quiet hours.
EPA WaterSense suggests reading your meter, letting it run for 2 hours, then reading it again. If the reading moved, water is going somewhere. Then close the house valve and watch the dial again: still moving means the loss is out in the yard between the meter and that valve, and stopped means it is inside the house. EPA WaterSense puts the average household's leaks at more than 9,300 gallons a year, and a break on a buried line leaks whether or not anyone is home. If every tap in the house also went weak.
The Main Line Jobs We Take On
Repairs
Replacement
What this page does not cover
We do not install water meters, and pool plumbing, including pool fill lines, is referred out. When a leak is hidden, our leak-detection partner locates it before the yard is opened, and we make the repair.
How a Water Line Job Runs
Rule out the house
On the first visit, the fixtures, the shutoff, and the meter are checked so a leak inside is not mistaken for one in the yard.
Mark the route, then settle the scope
Arizona 811 gets its two working days to paint the buried utilities, and you and Pavel (Paul) walk the line the new pipe would take. Repair, replacement, or reroute goes on paper with that route on it.
The ground goes back the way you walked it
Pavers, rock, turf, drip emitters, and valve boxes lifted off the route go back where they were, and you look at the finished strip before we leave.
Serving Phoenix From Our Phoenix Base
American Discount Plumbing is based in Phoenix and serves all of Phoenix.
What Water Line Repair Costs in Phoenix
The biggest variable is how much of the line has to come up: one nicked joint near the surface, or a full run under turf and pavers. The price comes once the cause is known. A trip where no work gets done has a $75 service fee, which is dropped when the job goes ahead, and service calls of $300 or less are 10% off.

Two Patterns Behind Main Line Calls
A yard project, then a wet spot
New trees, a fence post, or a sprinkler trench goes in, and within days a patch of ground stays wet.
A line nicked by a shovel is usually a short section to cut out and replace.
An older line that keeps failing
A second or third leak on the same buried run, a few feet from the last repair.
At that point, replacing the run may be the better spend than digging it up again.

What Phoenix Means for the Pipe Under Your Yard
The meter is the dividing line
Phoenix Water Services repairs leaks from the street to the water meter. Leaks on the customer's side are the property owner's responsibility, and City Code 28-5 limits the city's service-line repairs to the public right-of-way. If water is bubbling up at the meter box or in the street, call the city's water emergency line at 602-261-8000. From the meter to your house, the line is yours, and that is the part we work on. Outside Phoenix, your own city's water department sets its rules, so check with them.
What your service line is made of
Phoenix inventoried more than 480,000 water service lines for the state in 2024 and reports that no lead service lines have been found. The city's lookup at pipes.phoenix.gov shows the material on record for your address, which is useful to know before a repair. The city said it would mail notices, starting in late 2024, to residents whose service line material was listed as unknown.
Before anyone digs
Whoever digs must contact Arizona 811 first, and locators have two full working days to mark the buried utilities, excluding weekends and state holidays. A replacement date has to allow for that wait.
Code on a new line
Phoenix enforces the 2024 residential code, which sets a minimum of 3/4-inch for a water service pipe and requires it to be kept at least 5 feet from the building sewer, unless one of the code's listed exceptions applies. A new line has to meet both, and that can change where the new route runs.
Three Decisions on a Main Line Job
01 Patch the spot or replace the run
One leak on a line that is otherwise sound is a repair. Repeat failures, or a pipe that crumbles when uncovered, make replacement worth the price. When both make sense, you get both numbers.
02 Where the new line runs
The old line may run under a driveway, a patio, or a mature tree. A reroute takes a new path around them, so the concrete stays put, and its length and what it crosses are included in the quote.
03 What sits on top of the line
Pavers, rock, turf, and drip lines over the route all have to come up and go back. Walk the route with us before work starts, and point out what matters to you. Drip emitters and valve boxes near the route are easy to miss, so flag where they sit, along with any lighting wires or a gas line to a grill.
Main Water Line FAQs
Still have a question? Call Pavel (Paul) directly and get a straight answer, no phone tree.

Leave it alone and work from the meter reading instead. Our main shutoff valve page covers why a valve seizes and what the replacement process involves.
The house is without water, even though the line is open and the new section is connected. Once it is tied in, the water goes back on.
Yes. Both are work we do, and quoting them together lets the new yard line and the new PEX inside be planned as one system. In homes built before 1978, we only take on work that leaves painted surfaces undisturbed. If a repair would need a painted wall opened, that part goes to a lead-safe certified contractor you hire directly; we do not perform or arrange it.
Phoenix's building code exempts stopping a water pipe leak. Where a concealed pipe is defective and has to be removed and replaced with new material, the city treats it as new work, and permit work follows from there. Who files it is settled in writing before the job starts, and on plenty of these jobs it is the homeowner.
If a leak was stealing water before it reached the house, pressure at the taps generally recovers once the line is repaired. A new line cannot raise the pressure arriving at the meter, though; our low water pressure page covers what to check when that is the problem.
The likely route is the straight path from the meter box to where the pipe comes up from the soil at the house, though buried lines do bend around what was in the way when they were laid. Our main shutoff valve page covers where the house-end valve is located.
No. We do not offer trenchless or pipe-bursting methods.
We do commercial plumbing. For a building's water service, call with the line size and where the meter sits, and we will tell you whether it is a job we take on.
What Our Phoenix Customers Say
Bradley R. hired us to replumb the house, and later for much more.
“Pavel replumbed my entire house starting with water main at the street. He was always on time and worked hard to get the job finished at a very reasonable price. He does such a good job that we had him replace water heater, all the vanities, and the toilets. You couldn't find a friendlier and more honest guy. I highly recommend.”
