Shower Valve Repair and Replacement in Phoenix

AZ ROC #150707Licensed, Bonded & InsuredAll Valve BrandsSame-Day Service Available

The decision on a shower that drips, or never gets past lukewarm, is whether the part inside the valve can be replaced or the valve body itself has to come out of the wall. What settles it is the valve's make and whether a cartridge is still available for it. Plenty of these end at the handle opening, with the tile untouched.

Pavel Farcas (Paul) owns American Discount Plumbing and is the one who installs the shower trim. Single-handle or multi-handle, new or decades old, the valve is inspected by the same plumber who quotes the job.

THREE SHOWER VALVE PROBLEMS

What Your Shower Is Telling You

“My shower doesn't shut off all the way.”

A cartridge that has stopped sealing.

When the handle is off and water still dribbles from the head or spout, the cartridge or its seals have failed to close. On an older two- or three-handle valve, it is a stem washer or seat instead. Both are parts that come out through the handle opening, and a drip that is left alone runs day and night.

“Why is it only lukewarm when I turn it all the way to hot?”

Check the limit stop inside the valve before anyone blames the water heater.

Anti-scald valves have an adjustable stop that limits how far the handle can turn toward hot. Set too low, or knocked out of place when a cartridge was changed, it keeps the water lukewarm no matter what the heater does.

“Water comes out of the spout and the showerhead at the same time.”

A worn diverter, in the spout or in the valve.

In a tub-and-shower setup, the diverter directs water to the head. Where it lives in the tub spout, a new spout fixes it. Where it is part of the valve, it is a cartridge or diverter-stem repair.

WHAT WE HANDLE

Cartridges, Spouts and Whole Valves

In homes built before 1978, we only take on work that leaves painted surfaces undisturbed. If a repair would require opening a painted wall, that part goes to a lead safe certified contractor you hire directly; we do not perform or arrange it.

Cartridges, stems and stops

Cartridge replacement on single-handle valves, any brand
Stems, washers and seats on older two- and three-handle valves
Limit stops adjusted on anti-scald valves
Loose handles, and new trim that matches the valve

At the spout and the head

Tub spout and diverter replacement
Shower arm and showerhead replacement
Tub-only faucets that drip or will not shut off

Behind the wall

Full valve replacement when the body is corroded, or parts are no longer made
Old multi-handle valves changed to a single anti-scald valve

When the hot water runs out instead

A shower that starts hot and fades to cold over several minutes is a water heater problem. The valve controls the mix and cannot produce more hot water than the heater has; our water heater repair page covers what we check there.

When you call

What Happens When You Call About a Shower Valve

1

Send a photo of the handle

Describe the drip or the temperature problem. A picture of the handle and trim plate helps us tell which maker and model we are dealing with.

2

We look behind the trim

The trim comes off, the water is shut off, and the cartridge, stop, and limit stop are checked.

3

The failed part, shown to you

You see which part failed and whether a cartridge, a stem, or a whole valve is the fix.

4

We run it hot, cold and off

After the repair, the shower is run through its full range and left off long enough to confirm it stays dry.

WHAT IT COSTS

What Shower Valve Repair Costs in Phoenix

The price is set by the part that failed and how it has to be reached, and it is written down once we have seen the valve. If we visit and no work is done, you owe a $75 service fee. When we do the repair, that fee is dropped.

SHOWER VALVE PATTERN

A Pattern We See on Shower Valve Calls

American Discount Plumbing vs. the big national chains

An older multi-handle valve with nothing left to buy

A two- or three-handle shower from decades ago, dripping again, with replacement stems that no longer match anything on the shelf.

At that point, a new single-handle anti-scald valve is the lasting fix. It means opening the wall at the valve, so the tile question and, in a pre-1978 home, the painted-wall question get answered before any date is set.

PHOENIX CODE AND WATER

The Valve Code, Moving a Valve and Phoenix Water

The valve types the code allows

The 2024 International Plumbing Code took effect in Phoenix on August 1, 2025, and the city left its shower valve section unchanged. It calls for pressure-balancing, thermostatic, or combination valves on showers and tub-showers, installed at the point of use, with a stop that limits the water to 120°F. Pavel (Paul) puts in pressure-balance or thermostatic valves, whichever the local code calls for.

Moving a valve

Raising, lowering or shifting a valve takes more work than swapping one where it sits; the remodel plumbing page explains what changes.

Scale at the handle

The city's 2025 water report names faucets and showerheads among the fixtures hard water scales. Do not force a stiff shower handle; a snapped stem turns a cartridge swap into a longer job. Our water treatment page covers the water itself.

VALVE DECISIONS

Four Questions to Settle Before a Valve Is Replaced

01 Is the valve body worth saving?

If the valve body is sound and its maker still sells the cartridge, a cartridge is the smaller job. A corroded body, or an old valve that is not one of the code-listed anti-scald types, is where a full replacement pays off.

02 What happens to the trim you have?

Trim is made for a specific valve. A new handle and plate from a different maker means a new valve body from that maker, and the wall opening that comes with it.

03 Changing the showerhead at the same time?

The code says a shower valve has to be rated for the flow of the showerhead on it. If you are switching to a different head, tell us which one, so the valve and the head are a matched pair.

04 Through the tile, or from the back?

When the wall behind the shower is a closet or hallway, the valve can sometimes be reached from that side, and the tile left alone. That patch is drywall, which we refer out to a finisher. In a pre-1978 home, the back wall is a painted surface, so the lead-safe rule above applies. Tile that has to come off on the shower side is tile work, done by a tile setter.

Not under the code Phoenix adopted. It says in-line thermostatic valves cannot be used to meet the shower valve rule, so the protection has to sit in the shower valve itself, at the point of use.

The code handles it separately. A bathtub valve has to have, or be fed by, a temperature-limiting device, or a water heater listed for that job, set so the tub gets no more than 120°F.

Only up to the code's cap. The stop has to be set, per the maker's instructions, so the shower stays at or under the limit in the code Phoenix adopted. If the water is still cool at that setting, the cause is elsewhere, and the cartridge and the heater get checked next.

If the drip is heavy, close your home's main water shutoff. Some valves also have small built-in stops behind the trim plate, and your valve maker's instructions show where.

If you are handy, the maker's instructions for your model show the steps. Shut off the water first, then take the old cartridge to the store, since cartridges are brand- and model-specific. Reset the limit stop to the maker's setting afterward, or have us do it. If the stem is seized, leave it for us.

Sometimes. If the new trim plate is smaller than the old opening, some makers sell a larger cover plate; otherwise, closing the gap is tile work.

Not necessarily. Water left in the shower arm and head drains out for a short while after the handle closes. A drip that keeps going long after that, or starts again later, points to the cartridge or its seals.

“

“When my parents had a tub faucet fail, their neighbor suggested calling American Discount Plumbing. Paul came the same day and installed a cartridge to fix their issue. When I saw how he treated my parents, his number went in my phone as the person to call. So when my hot water heater went out, Paul came to get us back on track affordably, even coming after 7 p.m. to finish the project. We are grateful.”
