Range, Dryer & Water Heater Connectors | New Branch Lines | Google 5.0 Rated
Behind almost every range in a Deer Valley house from the 1970s or 1980s, there is a short tube nobody has looked at since the appliance went in. Its age and what it is made of decide whether a new range is a swap or a swap plus a length of new pipe. In a house of that age, the connector is often the oldest part of the gas system anyone will touch that day, and it is the part that gets settled before anything else on the job is.
The practical effect is that one of these calls usually has two prices in it: the appliance work you rang about, and the tube behind it that the job has no business leaving in place. Pavel Farcas (Paul) prices both before either is touched.

“We're swapping the old range for a new gas one this weekend.”
New appliance, new connector.
The instructions that come with Dormont gas connectors say: “NEVER reuse a gas connector. If a new appliance is purchased or an existing appliance is moved, a new connector must be used.” The old connector comes off with the old range, whatever it looks like.
“The dryer has to come out so the laundry floor can be redone.”
Leave it standing until the gas is off.
The CPSC warned that with old brass connectors, “Moving an appliance, even slightly, if only to clean behind it, could cause a weakened connector to fail.” The valve ahead of the dryer is closed and the connector identified before the dryer is eased out.
“There is no shutoff behind the stove, just a pipe out of the wall. Is that normal?”
A valve goes in before any connector does.
Dormont's instructions say “An accessible manual gas shutoff valve must be present on the gas supply ahead of the connector,” and tell anyone fitting a connector not to go ahead without one.
“The connector behind our water heater disappears into the closet wall.”
That calls for a reroute.
The same instructions say a connector must not be “concealed within or run through any wall, floor or other partition,” and that “The gas outlet must be in the same room as the appliance.” The fix is a pipe run to a valve beside the heater, with a new connector from there.
The Old Connector Behind a Deer Valley Range Comes First
What the CPSC found
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warned that “Some older corrugated metal tubes used to connect home appliances to natural gas supply pipes could corrode leading to a fire or explosion,” and that they are “used most often with gas ranges, ovens and clothes dryers.” The ones it named are “older, uncoated, brass connectors,” whose soldered end fittings can fail, and in 1996 it said they had not been made “for at least the past 10 years.” By then it had “received 200 reports of these connectors failing,” linked to 35 deaths and 59 injuries.
The CPSC's two instructions
The CPSC “recommends that ANY uncoated brass connector be replaced immediately by a new stainless steel connector or a new plastic-coated brass connector.” It also “warns consumers not to move their appliances in an effort to inspect the connectors themselves,” and says the connector “should be inspected only by a professional service provider.”
Why it comes up in this village
Census estimates for the 85027 ZIP code, at the village's I-17 core, put the median year built at 1988 and show 52.7% of its housing built between 1970 and 1989, much of it from the years when uncoated brass connectors were still in use. Ranges and dryers in those homes may have been replaced since, with a new connector at the same time, or may not have been. Older pockets near Cave Creek Road go back further still. So adding a branch off a kitchen line, relocating a dryer or putting in a new range all start at the same place: the valve and connector behind the appliance already there.
A new connector's own limits
A replacement connector has rules of its own. Dormont says not to bend one tighter than 1 1/2 inches inside diameter, “approximately the diameter of a golf ball,” with no right angles; not to use the connector or the gas line as the appliance's electrical ground; and to use only the fittings supplied or recommended with it. Its connectors meet the national standard for gas connectors, ANSI Z21.24.
The Order of Work on a Deer Valley Gas Job
Describe the appliance and the house
The appliance is eased out, and a light goes on the tube behind it, and that happens before any price is written. Leave the range or dryer where it stands until the visit. If there's a gas smell, don't look behind anything: get everyone out, then get 911 and the gas utility on the phone.
Shut off, identify, price
At the house, the valve ahead of the appliance is closed, the appliance is eased out, and the connector and valve are identified. The price covers the new connector, any missing valve, and any new branch or reroute.
The new connector goes on
A new branch or reroute counts as a gas line modification, which the City of Phoenix treats as permit work. The connector itself is fitted to a valve in the same room; every joint is tested with a non-corrosive leak-detection fluid, which the maker recommends over dish soap or an open flame. The old connector leaves with us.

Other Gas Work We Take On in the Village
Beyond connectors, Deer Valley gas jobs include new lines for a range, cooktop, dryer or water heater, gas piping for a switch to tankless, lines out to built-in grills and fire pits, and gas for whole-home standby generators. Leaking house piping is repaired. A range or dryer switching from electric to gas starts with a new line and a valve beside where it will stand.
The pipe above ground is black iron or CSST, and anything buried is polyethylene; each appliance gets a stainless-steel flexible connector.
In homes built before 1978, we only take on work that leaves painted surfaces undisturbed. If a reroute would need a painted wall opened, that part goes to a lead-safe certified contractor you hire directly; we do not perform or arrange it.

Connector Answers for Deer Valley Owners
Still have a question? Call Pavel (Paul) directly and get a straight answer, no phone tree.
Newer connectors are stainless steel or brass with a plastic coating, while the older ones the CPSC warned about are bare brass with no coating at all. The CPSC says it is “very difficult to tell just by looking at it whether a connector has been soldered.”
The CPSC named ranges, ovens and dryers as the most common places for these connectors. A water heater connector gets the same look.
Talking it through by phone is free of charge. Should we come out, look behind the appliance, and you then pass on any work, the trip is $75; replace the connector or anything else on that visit, and the $75 is dropped.
No. The connector maker's instructions rule out joining two or more connectors. The gas pipe is extended to a new valve near the new spot instead.
The CPSC urged people “to have their gas appliances inspected to see if they have one of these old, potentially dangerous connectors.”
