Low Water Pressure Repair in Phoenix

AZ ROC #150707Licensed, Bonded & InsuredOne Tap or the Whole HouseRegulators, Valves & Fixtures

Nearly every call to this page is some version of the same sentence: the water has gone weak. Where you notice it decides everything that follows, because one tap running thin while the rest of the house is fine and a whole house going soft the same morning are two different searches with almost nothing in common.

At American Discount Plumbing, owner Pavel Farcas (Paul) works back from the tap you are unhappy with. The fix might be a part under the sink, a valve at the front of the house, or the pressure regulator. A single weak sink and a weak house are different searches.

THREE LOW-PRESSURE PATTERNS

Three Low-Pressure Patterns and Where to Start

“It's just the bathroom sink. Everything else runs fine.”

One fixture, one cause: start at the tap.

When a single sink runs weak while every other tap is normal, the main supply is rarely the problem. The cause sits between the angle stop under that sink and the spout. If both hot and cold are weak there, the fixture is the suspect. If only one side is weak, look at that side's valve and supply line. Our faucets page covers the fixture repairs.

“Every tap in the house went weak.”

A whole-house weakness sends the search upstream.

When every tap and shower is weak, the cause is upstream of the fixtures: the pressure regulator, the main shutoff, the pipe itself, a treatment system in the line, or the supply reaching your meter. A gauge reading at a hose bib near the front of the house separates those quickly.

“Why is it fine at night and weak in the morning shower?”

A pattern that follows the clock is usually a demand pattern, not a fault in your house.

Phoenix Water Services says pressure dropping during the early morning rush is normal, when the whole neighborhood is getting ready at once. Inside the house, two fixtures running together can also expose an undersized or narrowed pipe. If it stays low all day, that is a different problem.

WHAT WE CHECK AND

Causes We Check and Fix

In homes built before 1978, we only take on work that leaves painted surfaces undisturbed. If a repair would require opening a painted wall, that part goes to a lead safe certified contractor you hire directly; we do not perform or arrange it.

At the fixture

Scaled aerators, showerheads, and cartridges
Angle stops under sinks and toilets that are partly closed or failing
Kinked or collapsed supply lines

At the house

Pressure regulators that fail low, replaced and set
Main shutoff valves that do not open fully
Filters and treatment equipment restricting flow

In the pipe

Repairs on the buried line from the meter to the house (a hidden leak is located by our leak-detection partner)
Older galvanized supply pipe narrowed by corrosion

When the supply itself is low

If the pressure at your meter is low, the issue is on the city's side, and the water utility is the one who can fix it. If several homes on your street lost pressure together, call Phoenix Water Services Customer Services at 602-262-6251 first, and note the time of day the pressure drops so you can describe the pattern to the person who answers. Outside Phoenix, that call goes to your own city's water provider.

When you call

How We Find the Cause

1

Read the pressure

A gauge threaded onto a hose bib shows the static pressure coming into the house. That number rules out causes in or out.

2

Walk it back from the tap

Fixture, angle stop, water heater, regulator, main shutoff, and supply line, in the order your symptoms point.

3

Repair and recheck

After the repair, the pressure and flow are checked again at the taps that were weak.

WHAT IT COSTS

What Low Pressure Repair Costs in Phoenix

There is no set price for low pressure, because the cause could be a two-minute cleaning or a new regulator. Once we know which it is, the price is in writing before any work. Finding the cause and then doing no work costs a $75 service fee. Have us make the repair and the fee is waived.

Service calls of $300 or less get 10% off. Veterans and customers 55-plus take 15% off, and seniors, military, and first responders take 10%.

TWO PATTERNS THAT POINT

Two Patterns That Point Somewhere Specific

Weak pressure after other work in the house

A new faucet, a water heater swap or a repair, and afterward one fixture or the whole house runs weak.

A valve that was closed for the job and not reopened fully is the first thing to check. So is debris knocked loose into an aerator when the water came back on.

Hot water weak, cold water fine

Only the hot side has lost pressure, often at every fixture.

That points to the water heater's shutoff valve, its connections or buildup inside the heater. It rules out the regulator and the city, which feed both sides.

PHOENIX CONDITIONS

Phoenix Pressure: The Numbers Behind a Weak Shower

What the city calls acceptable

The City of Phoenix calls 40 to 100 psi an acceptable pressure range. A house at 45 psi is inside that range and may still feel weaker than you are used to, so a low reading is not automatically the city's fault. If the reading sits well below that range and the regulator and main valve check out, the supply side is for the city to look at.

The code's upper limit

The 2024 residential code, which Phoenix enforces, caps static pressure inside the house at 80 psi and calls for a regulator where the street pressure runs higher. That regulator is on your side of the meter. When it fails, it can fail low, which is how a regulator installed to protect your pipes ends up starving your showers.

Hard water at the fixtures

The city's 2025 Water Quality Report says hard water can cause scaling on faucets and showerheads.

PRESSURE DECISIONS

Three Decisions When the Cause Is Found

01 When the regulator is the cause

A regulator set too low can be turned back up. One that will not hold its setting, or has failed internally, should be replaced. A new regulator is set for your house once it is in. Our regulator page covers that job.

02 When the pipe is the cause

If one run of corroded pipe is choking a bathroom, replacing that run can restore it. When the pipe runs are narrowed throughout the whole house, a PEX repipe is the long-term answer.

03 Clean the fixture or treat the water

If scale keeps clogging the same aerators and cartridges, cleaning them is the quick fix, and water treatment is the long one. Treatment is work we also do, and it is quoted separately.

Only if the old showerhead is the problem, usually from scale or a clogged flow restrictor. If every fixture is weak, a new showerhead just delivers the same low supply.

Yes, if a cartridge is clogged, the unit is undersized for the house, or a bypass valve is partly turned. Checking whether pressure recovers with the system bypassed is part of the diagnosis.

It can. A leak on the main line prevents water from reaching the house. A wet spot in the yard or a meter that moves with everything off points that way; see our main water line page.

Yes. With the tap off, unscrew the aerator from the spout, rinse out any grit and scale, then screw it back on. If the flow comes back, that was the cause. If it does not, the restriction is further back, in the cartridge or the valve that feeds it.

For water valves, yes; never turn a gas valve yourself. Turn the angle stop or the main shutoff slowly counterclockwise until it stops. If it will not move, or it starts to drip at the stem, leave it for us.

On a tankless unit, a cold-water inlet filter packed with grit can restrict the flow through the heater. Cleaning that filter is routine tankless maintenance; our tankless maintenance page covers it.

A slow fill at one toilet is usually the angle stop behind it, partly closed or scaled, or a clogged screen in the fill valve. If every toilet is slow, the cause is upstream, with the rest of the house.

The Arizona REALTORS seller disclosure form asks whether the seller is aware of any water pressure problems. Fixing the cause first lets the answer describe a repair.

Same-day visits run Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. A valve or an aerator can often be handled on the first visit; a regulator or pipe job is quoted and scheduled.
