Hose Bib and Outdoor Faucet Repair in Phoenix
If the outdoor faucet drips after you shut it off, water sprays from the handle when the hose is running, or the stucco under the spigot stays dark and wet, you're on the right page. Outdoor faucets work hard in Phoenix, sitting in full sun and feeding hoses all summer, and most of their problems come down to a few parts.
Pavel Farcas (Paul) runs American Discount Plumbing, and outdoor faucets are part of the everyday work, from a worn washer to a faucet that has to come off the wall.

Outdoor faucets from any maker. What a Leaking Outdoor Faucet Is Telling You
“The outdoor faucet won't stop dripping.”
Drip with the handle shut: a worn washer or seat.
A drip from the spout with the handle closed means the washer or the seat it presses against no longer seals. EPA WaterSense estimates that a faucet dripping once a second wastes more than 3,000 gallons a year, and an outdoor one can drip for months before anyone notices.
“Water sprays out around the handle when the hose is on.”
Spray at the stem points to packing that has given up.
Water escaping behind the handle only while the faucet is open points to the packing or the stem. Sometimes the packing can be tightened or replaced; a worn stem usually means a new faucet.
“The wall under the spigot is always wet.”
The leak may be inside the wall, where you cannot see it.
Dampness, stains, or soft stucco below the faucet can indicate that the pipe or fitting behind the faucet is leaking inside the wall. That is a different repair from a dripping spout, and it is worth catching before the water spreads.
What We Fix on Outdoor Faucets
When the leak is inside the wall
Reaching a pipe behind a faucet can mean opening stucco or drywall. If the leak is hidden further in the wall, our leak-detection partner locates it first. Patching the wall finish afterward is done by a contractor you hire directly. In homes built before 1978, we only take on work that leaves painted surfaces undisturbed. If a repair would require opening a painted wall, that part goes to a lead safe certified contractor you hire directly; we do not perform or arrange it.
Outside our work
Pool plumbing, including a fill line that runs to a pool, is not work we do; we refer it.
Two checks before you call
From the Drip to the Fix
Find where it leaks
The spout, the handle, and the wall below each get checked, since each one has a different fix behind it.
Make the repair, and keep the old part
A washer, the packing, the stem, or the whole faucet- whichever failed- and the worn part goes in your hand rather than straight in the truck.

What Hose Bib Repair Costs in Phoenix
What failed decides the price: a washer, the packing, the whole faucet, or the pipe behind it. It is in writing before work starts. We charge a $75 service fee only when a visit ends with no work; repairs we carry out have no service fee.
Veterans and those 55 and older take 15% off the bill. Seniors, first responders, and military members take 10%, as does any service call of $300 or less.

Two Outdoor Faucet Problems People Make Worse
A handle that spins and changes nothing
The handle turns and turns, and the flow stays the same, or the faucet will not shut off at all.
The stem or the grip where the handle meets it has stripped, and forcing it further can snap the stem off inside the body. On an older faucet, replacing the whole faucet is the practical fix, and the price reflects that from the start.
A new faucet that leaks where it meets the wall
A faucet swapped in a weekend project, and now water weeps from the threads at the wall.
The threads need to be sealed properly, or the fitting behind the faucet has cracked from being turned too far. Either way, the fix starts by removing the faucet again.

Phoenix Weather and Your Outdoor Faucets
Sun on a west wall, and a hose left charged
The condition that wears out hose bibs here is heat. Sky Harbor logged 122 days at or above 100°F in 2025, and a faucet on a west-facing wall takes the worst of every one of those afternoons. Phoenix Water Services notes that exposed pipes, plastic ones especially, are more susceptible to extreme temperatures, leaks, and breaks.
A hose left screwed on and charged retains that heat and the full-house pressure, sitting on two soft parts: the washer at the seat and the packing at the stem. Those are the two that have failed on nearly every outdoor faucet we take apart here. When you finish with the hose, shut the faucet at the wall, let the hose go slack, and coil the plastic hose in the shade for the same reason.
The cold nights, briefly
Freezing is the rarer risk, with a Sky Harbor normal of 0.6 nights a year and none recorded in 2023, 2024 or 2025, and Phoenix Water Services still asks people to plan for the ones that do arrive. Its advice is to remove and drain the hoses, and, where an indoor valve feeds an outdoor faucet, to close that valve, open the outdoor faucet to drain it, and leave it open so any water left in the pipe has room to expand. If a faucet gives nothing after a cold night, leave it on and call a plumber.
Hard water at the spout
Hard water leaves scale on faucets, the city's 2025 water quality report says, and on an outdoor faucet that scale collects on the stem and seat.
Three Choices on an Outdoor Faucet
01 Repair the faucet or replace it
A new washer or packing on a sound faucet is a small repair. A worn stem, a damaged seat, or a cracked body makes a new faucet the better buy. We show you which part failed.
02 The style of the replacement
A new faucet can match the old one, or you can switch styles, including a faucet with a built-in vacuum breaker or an anti-siphon design. Say which you want.
03 Who supplies the faucet
We install the faucet you bought; our installation is warranted, but the fixture itself is not. If we supply the faucet, the fixture comes with a warranty as well. Either way, the installation is the same.
Hose Bib FAQs
Still have a question? Call Pavel (Paul) directly and get a straight answer, no phone tree.

Yes. Hose bib, sillcock, spigot, and outdoor faucet all describe the faucet on the outside of the house that a hose screws onto.
A slow drip that stops after a few seconds can be water draining from the spout. A drip that keeps going means the faucet is not sealing.
Moving one a few feet along the same wall is the simpler of the two, because the supply is already there. Putting a faucet on a wall with no water behind it means running new pipe to reach it, through the attic and down inside the wall or along the outside, and that route is what decides the price. It changes the paperwork too: Phoenix's list of work exempt from a permit covers replacing a valve in place, and it calls for a permit on the relocation of any valve, pipe, or fixture. Tell us which wall on the call, and we will say which of the two you are asking for.
Yes, and when the two sit on the same riser, both are looked at on one visit, which saves the need to arrange a second shutdown. Our main shutoff valve page covers where that valve sits and what the code asks of it.
A squeal while it runs is often a loose or worn washer vibrating in the flow. A bang when you shut it off is water hammer, which high house pressure makes worse; our pressure regulator page covers that side.
Run the faucet with a hose attached for a few minutes and watch the wall. If it darkens only then, the connection behind the faucet is the suspect. If it stays wet with the faucet off, the supply pipe in the wall or a sprinkler line running past it may be leaking instead.
Close the inside valve that feeds that faucet, if there is one, or the main shutoff; then the faucet can be opened and the washer swapped with basic tools. If the stem will not come out, or the seat under the washer is chewed up, stop there and call.
On a freeze-warning night, covering an exposed faucet is a simple step. Phoenix Water Services puts it this way: when you think about covering your plants, think about how to protect your water pipes, too.
It does. A frost-free faucet shuts off at the far end of a long stem, inside the wall, so the leaking washer and seat sit back there rather than at the spout, and the whole stem extends through the wall to reach them. The stem also has to match the thickness of your wall. If you are supplying the replacement, measure the old stem end-to-end and check the connection type before you buy, because a stem of the wrong length will not seat.
