Gas Pressure Testing in Phoenix
A pressure test is a short, measurable job with one right answer: the gauge holds, or it drops. What decides your day is who has to see it hold. The utility before the meter goes back on, a city inspector before a trench is covered, or the county on a line that has been out of service, each want the same proof, and each wants it at their own moment.
American Discount Plumbing is one licensed plumber. Pavel Farcas (Paul) holds AZ ROC #150707 himself, so the plumber who sets the gauge and the name on the signed test record are the same.

Leave the building. Take everyone with you and leave the doors open. From somewhere safe, call 911 and Southwest Gas at 877-860-6020. Leave switches, thermostats, and appliance controls alone on the way out.
Southwest Gas lists the signs as a faint rotten-egg odor, hissing or roaring from the ground or an appliance, and dirt blowing into the air or water bubbling. Call us once the utility has made the property safe, and we will test and repair the piping you own.

Three Situations That Put a Gauge on Your Gas Line
“The gas has been off since they found the leak.”
Meter dead after a shutoff: nothing goes back in until the piping proves tight.
The code calls for a leak check the moment gas goes into a new system or one restored after an interruption of service, and it keeps appliances out of operation until the piping has been checked, purged, and the connections checked too. We test the piping, repair any failures, and hand you a signed record of the results.
“The line is run, and the inspector comes Thursday.”
The code wants the pipe proved gastight before anything is allowed to cover it.
Piping has to be tested gastight before it goes into service or gets closed up. In unincorporated Maricopa County, the inspection is called for once the piping is installed and placed under pressure test, ahead of backfilling the trench or covering it up. The code keeps joints and welds exposed through the test, and we set the gauge and leave the line holding for the visit.
“We were told the old approval expired because the house sat empty.”
Clearance lapsed with the service: out in the county, the old pipe is treated as new pipe.
Unincorporated Maricopa County writes it without a hedge: gas piping must be inspected and pressure tested in all cases, even when a clearance is requested for a previous approval that expired for lack of service. A long vacancy, a meter pulled years back, a house bought at auction. We test it as though it went in yesterday.
What We Put Under Pressure, and What We Leave Alone
Tests we run
What comes with the test
The one job this test leaves to somebody else
Locating a leak is specialist work. Tracing one in a buried line is a partner company's trade, and we repair and retest once it has been found. If a drop on the gauge points underground, we help you make that call.
How a Pressure Test Runs, Start to Finish
Give us the date the inspector holds
Call (602) 883-2787 with the inspection date, the permit number if there is one, and what the line feeds. That date is what the rest of the work is built around.
The system is isolated and capped
Appliance connections are disconnected or valved out, unused outlets are closed and capped, and the pressure source is isolated so the gauge reads the pipe alone.
Pressure goes on, and the clock starts
Test pressure is set against the working pressure of the system, and the hold is timed to the code minimum for its size.
The gauge is read against the clock
A drop counts as a leak unless something else plainly explains it. A section that fails is repaired and tested again.
You get the record
A signed test record with the pressure, the hold and the date. Where a jurisdiction is inspecting, we aim to be on site while the line is still holding.
Serving Phoenix From Our Phoenix Base
American Discount Plumbing is based in Phoenix and serves all of Phoenix.
What a Gas Pressure Test Costs in Phoenix
A test is quoted in writing before it starts because the price depends on the system size and the capping it requires. Where we come out, and the work is declined, the visit is $75; approve the work and that $75 leaves the bill.
Seniors, military, and first responders take 10%; veterans and customers over 55 take 15%; service calls of $300 or less take 10% off; and holiday work and jobs past 7 p.m. can carry more. Our pricing page sets it all out.
If the test fails, the repair is quoted in writing with the retest priced alongside it.
What Turns Up on Test Calls
A dial with far more range than the job needs
The code is specific about the instrument: a manometer, a device built and calibrated to measure pressure loss during the test period.
It sizes the dial too. On a mechanical gauge, the top of the scale can be no more than five times the test pressure, since a dial with too much range hides a slow drop. We bring the gauge that matches your working pressure.
A new appliance runs on an older, untested house
Adding a branch for one new appliance leaves the rest of the house out of it. The code requires the newly installed branch to be tested, with the connection between the new and existing piping checked using a noncorrosive leak-detecting fluid or another approved method.
That keeps a fire-pit line from turning into a whole-house project. Existing piping gets its own look and its own price where it deserves one.

The Rules Your Test Is Measured Against
The code Phoenix runs on, and the numbers inside it
Phoenix City Council adopted the 2024 Phoenix Building Construction Code on June 18, 2025, and Ordinance G-7397 took effect on August 1, 2025. Its testing section is unamended, so the numbers apply here as written: test pressure at no less than one and a half times the proposed maximum working pressure, with 3 psi as the floor; a ten-minute minimum hold on a single-family home and a half hour for every 500 cubic feet of pipe volume on larger systems; air, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, or an inert gas as the medium. Those are the numbers we set the gauge and the timer to.
Where the gas company's pipe ends, and yours begins
Southwest Gas owns and maintains the piping and facilities up to and including your meter. In its own words, you own the natural gas piping running from the meter to the structure and to outside gas appliances, what it calls customer buried piping. It asks owners to maintain those lines and inspect them for leaks and corrosion. That customer-owned run from the meter inward is exactly the pipe we put under test.
Unincorporated Maricopa County, where the clearance comes from
The county requires an inspection approval and a utility clearance from a county inspector before residential or commercial gas is turned on. Its gas line inspection covers the piping, the pressure test, and the bedding of the trench, and the county sends the clearance to the service provider once the final inspection is approved. Gas stays off until then, so we schedule the test to land on the inspector's day and hold the line for it.
Three Calls to Make Before the Gauge Goes On
Decide how much of the system goes under test
A piping system can be tested as a complete unit or in sections. A whole-house test answers the widest question and takes the longest hold, since every outlet has to be capped first. Tell us what the job is for, a permit, a sale or your own peace of mind, and we will say which one the situation calls for.
Sorting out who is handling the permit
Phoenix's administrative provisions keep gas piping out of the ordinary-repairs exemption, leaving an in-kind appliance swap with no change to the connecting piping as the one gas-side exemption. The permit and its inspection date belong to whoever takes them out on your job: you, a general contractor, or a builder. Give us that date, and we build the test around it.
Which paper you actually need
Ours is a signed record of the test we ran, carrying the pressure, the duration and the date. The jurisdiction's is separate, and its inspector is the one who gives the pass or fail in front of the customer. A landlord, a buyer, or a builder may want either, so ask them which before we start, and we will make sure you leave with it.
Gas Pressure Testing FAQs
Still have a question? Call Pavel (Paul) directly and get a straight answer, no phone tree.

Yes, for the length of the test and the capping either side of it. On a whole-house test, that means no hot water, no cooking, and no dryer for those hours, so we agree the slot when you book.
For a test of existing piping, rarely. We work from the appliance connections, the outlets, and a convenient tie-in point. If a failed section sits inside a finished wall, you get a written price for the opening before anything is cut.
One page: the address, what was tested, the test pressure, how long it held, the date, and a signature. It is written to be handed straight to a landlord, an agent, or a general contractor.
Yes. We test what is in the ground, whoever put it there. If it fails, you get the repair priced before we touch it, and that price is yours to take back to the installer.
The utility restores service. Once gas enters a new or restored system, the piping is checked for leaks, and appliances remain out of operation until the check, the purge, and the connection checks are completed.
Yes. Restaurants, bars, and tenant build-outs get the same code and the same test.
It means the piping tested held pressure for the required time on that day, with no evidence of leakage or other defects. That is what the record says.
