types of water heaters

Traditional Tank Water Heater

Traditional water heaters are still the most popular option in water heating options. Not only are they cheaper than a hybrid or a tankless unit, but they also don’t have the space requirement of a hybrid or the limited and inconsistent heating problems of a tankless unit.

Hybrid Water Heaters

A hybrid water heater uses a unique combination of a heat pump and eclectic power to reduce the cost of heating water. A hybrid also produces more hot water than a traditional tank and produces it faster. Experts estimate that a family with a hybrid water heater will save about $3500 in water heating costs over the life of a tank--certainly enough to justify it’s higher cost.

Tankless Water Heaters

Tankless water heaters truly offer hot water on demand without that old-fashioned tank filled with water waiting in the garage all day for the homeowner to want a quick shower! If you want to gear your home toward better efficiency, would like a water heater with lower maintenance, or are looking for a small-space option, a tankless water heater might be right for you.

Signs you need a new water heater

Water heater is 10-15 years old

If your water heater is 10-15 years old, it is a pretty good bet that it might be nearing the end of its days. If you’ve taken diligently good care of it, drained it regularly, and your water isn’t too hard, when it breaks down, it might be suitable for another season or two. If you’ve been a bit lackadaisical about the maintenance, and it’s had a couple of small repairs in a row, your older model might be sighing it’s last.

Hot water is a rusty color

Orange water means the bottom of the tank has rusted. It doesn’t mean that it’s getting older and might be on its last season. Rust in the water means the tank has already been compromised, and it’s bleeding out, as it were. Time to select a new water heater.

Tank is leaking

A leaking water heater may be a sign it needs to be replaced--but wait! If it’s a faulty drain valve, it’s possible to replace that because it isn’t the tank itself. Replace the unit if the tank itself is leaking.
